Étienne François's paintings are born from a vast corpus of images; he never uses photographs directly. His inspiration comes from memories or notes that he regularly takes. His paintings are worked on by theme, forming series. He works on clichés from art history, which give rise to reflections on the pattern. But while these sources are, by nature, particularly recognizable, they remain for him a repertoire of forms, a visual impulse to paint, rather than quotations or references.
Reappropriation often takes place via a detail, a formal element that he diverts, trying to avoid overly obvious representation. His paintings are constantly evolving, moving away from the initial idea to work on form and pattern. He wants to show the path, the changes that have nourished the final image.
