Pour sa quatrième exposition personnelle à 22,48 m2, Claudia Larcher, loin de ses paysages architecturaux, nous présente un nouveau projet basé sur des «émojis» connus, que nous utilisons probablement tous dans notre vie quotidienne : un visage riant aux larmes, un visage larmoyant, un roulement des yeux, un sourire, un visage au regard neutre, un joyeux effronté, un visage malheureux et un autre amoureux. En novembre 2019, Larcher a fait traduire ces pictogrammes numériques en leurs analogues physiques par des sculpteurs de masques sinhala dans le cadre d’un programme de résidence artistique en coopération avec la fondation One World au Sri Lanka. La ville d’Ambalango- da sur la côte sud-ouest du Sri Lanka est connue pour sa sculpture traditionnelle de masques. Ces derniers étaient à l’origine utilisés par la population pour des rituels de danse afin de chasser des démons maléfiques, mais ils sont aujourd’hui davantage utilisés à des fins touristiques. Larcher a fait sculpter de façon traditionnelle des émoticônes en forme de masques. Par conséquent, elle les a associés à des signes et des rituels différents de ceux de leurs origines. Ils gardent pourtant un lien commun : la référence au masque en tant que symbole de la perte du visage (naturel).

For her fourth solo show at 22,48 m2, Claudia Larcher, far from her usual architectural landscapes, presents a new work based on a selection of some popular emojis that we all probably use in our daily chats: a tearful face, a joyful one, an eye-rolling gesture, a smile, a neutral look, a happy-cheeky expression, an unhappy face and an in-love emoji. In November 2019, Larcher had these digital pictograms translated into analogs by Sinhala mask carvers as part of an artist-in-residence program in cooperation with the One World Foundation in Sri Lanka. The town of Am- balangoda, on the south western coast of Sri Lanka, is famous for its traditional mask carving. The masks produced there were originally used by the population for dancing rituals in order to drive evil demons away, but today they are mostly used for tourism purposes. Larcher had the emoticons carved as masks in a traditional way and the- refore associated them with signs and rituals that – actually – could not differ more from their origins. However, a common link between them can be found: the reference to the mask as a symbol for the loss of the (natural) face.
